#SeasonalSonnets: 20th Dec.

Hello my lovely readers!

I'm back on the disability theme tonight (you couldn't keep me off it for long!). This #SeasonalSonnets entry was inspired by a new video from BBC Three, entitled 'Things Not to Say to Someone With Cerebral Palsy'. It genuinely made me laugh out loud in recognition (and not only because one of the contributors is a friend from my old school, Ted), so I just had to write a sonnet on a similar theme.

I've included a link to the video below, so please do have a watch, and I hope you enjoy them both.

Until tomorrow!

20th December

Most of you know I’ve something called CP,
and ‘tis this condition that has made me wheely.
It’s also what inspired my PhD,
t‘say actors like me deserve to get work equally*.
In this life there’re things that people say
on seeing me (or friends) out in our chairs –
often ‘cause they’re unsure if it’s okay
but mostly it’s just awkward (and hilaire!).
Sometimes I think ‘What goes on in their heads!?’
It’s like they spot me and suppose they’re clever
but really I’ve had similar phrases said
since I was young (which feels like forever!).
‘Though telling t’stories makes me laugh uproariously
the living of them can drag on laboriously.

*I actually mean ‘equitably’ here, since there’s a difference, but ‘equally’ rhymed better.

Thanks, BBC Three!
